About Venice

Venice is just half an hour away from Siesta Key. It is one of the most popular coastal Florida towns, especially in the wintertime. This area was originally inhabited by Native Americans over 12,000 years ago. When settlers arrived in the 1800s, the city was initially established as “Horse and Chaise.” The city got the name “Venice” in 1888. It started to grow into the destination we know today during the Florida land boom in the 1920s.

Today, Venice is home to around 23,000 people and has tons of activities to discover. There’s a little something for everyone in this city, from the fun annual events to the incredible museums and historic sites, there’s something for everyone in this city! It’s just a quick trip down US-41 S to get here from Siesta Key.

Things to Do

Venice has so many incredible attractions that it would be nearly impossible for us to name them all. However, when you’re in town, you definitely want to take some time to relax on the shores! Venice has often been called the Shark’s Tooth Capital of the World since it’s not uncommon for these unique pieces to wash up on the sand. Head to the beach to see if you can discover one for yourself!

If you’re traveling to Venice with your four-legged friend, you don’t have to skip your trip to the beach. Simply head down to Brohard Paw Park, where you’re able to let your dog off the leash and have them run to their heart’s content! This beach is one of a handful of pet-friendly properties in Venice but is arguably the most popular. The beach is more than 22 acres, but there’s an acre specifically reserved for pets that includes features like a doggy shower, picnic area, drinking fountains, and fire hydrants.

Whether you’re traveling with a dog or not, be sure to spend some time at Caspersen Beach. This shoreline stretch is relatively secluded and is great for truly relaxing and watching the waves roll in. There aren’t many amenities here, but it allows you to actually enjoy a quiet afternoon by the water. If you do bring your dog here, they’re supposed to stay on a leash, though many pet owners who visit first thing in the morning do allow their dogs to run free for a while before sunbathers show up.

Most Popular Restaurants

Of course, while you’re exploring Venice, you’ll want to indulge in some of the best Venice restaurants. You’re in luck! Whether you want upscale or casual, seafood or burgers, coffee or ice cream, there’s a spot in Venice just for you.

Venice is known for its wide range of culinary influences, meaning there’s a restaurant to satisfy any worldly craving you might have. Want some pizza or another classic Italian dish? Trattoria Da Mino is the place to be. Want to experience authentic Cuban cuisine? Visit the Suncoast Café. Those looking for delicious Indian food should visit Tikka Indian Cuisine. If you are wanting a Mediterranean meal, plan to visit Joy’s Kouzine.

You can get all your American favorites as well. There’s nothing quite like a delicious plate of barbecue, which you can find at Darrell’s. Ready for seafood? Daiquiri Deck is among the best places to find it. Blu’ Island Bistro is a bit more upscale and innovative. In contrast, BrewBurgers Pub & Grill is perfect for a casual evening with your loved ones. And this is just the beginning of all the great food options in the area!

Other Things to Do Nearby

While there’s plenty to do in Venice itself, there are a few notable attractions just outside the city limits that are more than worth a visit. To start, Oscar Scherer State Park lies just between Venice and Sarasota in the little town of Osprey. Here, you’ll be able to engage in any outdoor activity you please, from cycling to birdwatching to fishing, hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, and more! There are plenty of amenities that are accessible to all. With more than 15 miles of trail to explore, you could easily spend an entire day simply enjoying the nature on display here.

North Port is home to Warm Mineral Springs Park, the ideal destination when you simply want to unwind. Temperatures are a consistent average of 85 all year, allowing visitors to indulge in the relaxing waters no matter when they visit. In addition to the namesake mineral springs, this destination also offers spa services such as waxing, skincare, facials, and massages. If you’re traveling with kids, not to worry; they’ve got a designated kids’ area where your little ones can enjoy their day while you get pampered!

Want to relax while still staying active? Right in Venice, you’ll find the Pelican Pointe Golf and Country Club, where you can see some incredible nature while engaging in your favorite sport. Of course, there are world-class golfing opportunities here, but you can also play some tennis or pickleball or go for a swim. You’ll have plenty to discover in this 1,000-acre property!

Finally, while there are tons of great beaches in Venice itself, it’s worth taking a trip to Englewood to experience Manasota Key Beach. This shoreline stretch is never crowded and offers truly uninterrupted views of the water, perfect for relaxing with the ones you love most. There are tons of interesting wildlife, calm waves for wading or splashing with your kids, and soft sands to spread out your blanket and have an afternoon picnic or watch the sun go down over the waves.
