January Events in Siesta Key and Sarasota

As the holiday season comes to a close, it is still the middle of winter in many parts of the world. Escape to Sarasota and Siesta Key to find an assortment of outdoor activities, family friendly activities, and shows celebrating the arts and community.

Below are four Siesta Key and Sarasota events to keep on your radar in January:

5th Annual Andrew Monroe Memorial 5K Run/Walk

Location: 948 Beach Road, Siesta Key, FL 34231

Renowned and adored local sports hero, Andrew Monroe, was killed in a car accident in 2011. Every year since his death the Andrew Monroe Memorial Scholarship Group and the Sarasota Community Foundation co-hosts a 5K Run/walk to support programs and scholarships for senior athletes.

The run is $35 for participants. Hundreds gather at 8am on Jan 7th for a brisk and rewarding run through Siesta Beach.

11th Annual Sarasota Native American Indian Festival

Location: Sarasota Fairgrounds, 3000 Ringling Blvd, Sarasota, FL

The arts and culture are both vitally important for Sarasota. The 11th Annual Sarasota Native American Indian Festival at the Sarasota Fairgrounds is a celebration of the area’s authentic heritage. You can seek out some spectacularly sincere gifts, including intricate bead necklaces, hand-crafted pottery, and many other original arts and crafts.

The event also features a less tangible display of Native American Indian culture. Performance dancers and story tellers will share an often-unheard and unseen angle of the rich Indian history in Sarasota.

The weekend event runs January 19th to the 21st from 9am to 5pm on Friday, 10am to 6pm on Saturday, and 10am to 5pm on Sunday. Tickets are available at the gate for $8 and $4 for ages 6 to 12.

The 5K Zombie Run

Location:
Nathan Benderson Park, 5851 Nathan Benderson Circle, Sarasota

Have you ever debated with your family what you would do if there was a zombie outbreak? Now you can realize your end-of-the-world plans in the format of a 5K Zombie Run at Nathan Benderson Park.

Choose to a be a zombie or a runner. Zombies will block off different points along the course and attempt to pull the runners’ flags off while runners will evade their brain-chomping antics and head to the finish line. Zombies begin at 9am for their makeup and zombie training.

This is a non-competitive and non-timed run and all participants will receive a gift, t-shirt and/or a finisher award. The event begins just after 9am on January 20th. The prices for participants range from $20 to $50.

Siesta Key Farmer’s Market

Location: 5104 Ocean Blvd., Siesta Key

At the Siesta Key Village every Sunday in January from 9am to 1pm, you will find one of the biggest and brightest farmer’s markets in Florida. The Siesta Key Farmer’s Market has hand-made candles, spa items, including towels and bath bombs, and rows and rows of produce.

Guests can also see a vivid display of local art and crafts from area experts, such as Lloyd Dobson and Tim Steller. Steller’s work is definitively Siesta Key – wood crafts and wall art capturing the marine life of the island.
