2017 World Rowing Championships

The upcoming 2017 World Rowing Championships will be one of the largest and most highly anticipated Sarasota events and will be held from September 24 through October 1, 2017. It will feature 1,700 of the best male and female athletes from countries around the world competing in a full range of rowing events.

Back in 2013, Sarasota was selected as the venue for the 2017 championships. The choice was supported by several prominent political and business leaders including then-President Obama. They noted that the beautiful beaches of Sarasota and Siesta Key along with the many attractions and things to do there would be ideal for hosting the 42,000+ expected attendees.

2017 world rowing championships in Sarasota

Hosted at Nathan Benderson Park

The event will be held at the Nathan Benderson Park at 5851 Nathan Benderson Circle, Sarasota, FL. It is located east of the Sarasota-Bradenton airport and directly west of I-75. This gorgeous park features a vast 400-acre manmade lake built to FISA racing standards where the rowing competitions will be held, along with 600 additional acres of land to explore.

The park was recently redesigned to be a premier rowing course, and since 2009, it has hosted several different organized regatta competitions. Formerly used for sand and shell mining, it was one of the few venues in the United States that had every feature needed to be able to adequately host the World Rowing Competition.

A full event week schedule

In addition to the rowing competition, there’s a full schedule planned with additional events being held concurrently. Some of the planned events include a recommended exploration of downtown Sarasota and nearby attractions such as Siesta Key throughout the week.

A Youth Regatta competition, Regatta Wine and Dine with food and beer samplings, and Opening Ceremony will be held on September 23rd as the competition opens. Local liaisons will also be taking visitors on tours of the local attractions during several days.

The Susan G. Komen “Row for the Cure” follows the event

After the competition finishes on October 1st, 2017, the “Row for the Cure” will be held, a fun regatta charity event that brings the world together to find a cure for breast cancer. It will include kayaking, rowing, and dragon boat racing and will be accepting both individual and team registrations for a flat donation. Individuals without a team will be provided with one at the event. No rowing experience will be needed to attend, and full equipment will be provided.
